Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter strikes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, the majority of them can be tracked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not handled, your system may suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system might be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises around the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies might notice increased symptoms. Some other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
