Which Uses Less Energy? AC Fan On or in Auto?

During the hot weather, operating your air conditioning can be your biggest monthly utility charge. So, it’s only natural that you’re looking for ways to save. That might entail trying an energy-efficient AC setting or even upgrading to an ENERGY STAR®-rated unit through air conditioner installation.

Adjusting your air conditioning’s fan setting is a second way you can spend less money.

Your air conditioner works with a fan to dispatch the chilled air it creates. You adjust this fan at your thermostat by setting it to “auto,” which means the fan will only work when the air conditioner is operating. Or you can adjust it to “on,” which means it will run all the time.

Does putting your AC on “fan” save energy in Columbus? Not necessarily. Typically, running your air conditioner’s fan all the time is going to drive up your energy bill slightly.

But it also provides a few perks (and downsides) in relation to your home’s comfort. Here’s why.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “On”

Having your air conditioner’s fan go continuously can better balance your house’s comfort. This is great if you live in a two-story home, since rooms upstairs can be warmer. It’s also ideal if you have difficulties with uneven cooling due to hot and cold areas.

It’s also advantageous if one of your loved ones suffers from allergies, asthma or other respiratory issues. That’s since the air is consistently being circulated and filtrated. On the other hand, you may have to change your air filters more often.

Having the fan on constantly can also drive up your energy bills. It could also make the fan wear out prematurely and need air conditioning repair.

Your house may also appear more moist. Air conditioning helps control humidity by extracting wetness from the air. But if the fan is continuously on, it’s more difficult for moisture to drip from the condenser externally.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “Auto”

This is the best energy-efficient setting, because the fan will only go when your air conditioner does. It’s great if your house always seems the right temperature, regardless of which room you’re in.

There are a few drawbacks to using the auto setting. You could run into hot and cold areas in your home and lower air quality. This is due to the fact air isn’t continuously being distributed or being repeatedly purified.

That said, you’ll use a lower amount of energy and won’t be required to replace your air filter as regularly. Both are savings that can add up over the year, so you’ll have to think about what’s best for your home.
