Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Columbus just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a professional out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the approaching days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area regularly to be sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have piled up throughout the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Columbus will more than likely go up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the probability of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At Wolfe & Sons Heating and Cooling in Columbus, we are always available to inspect any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or buying a new system.
