The weather is finally heating up and soon you could have to turn over to your air conditioner. Along with setting up your annual air conditioner service with the team at Wolfe & Sons Heating and Cooling, there are a few other things you can do to keep comfortable and save money this month.
During the in-between season in Columbus, those far too few spring days, you may use ceiling fans to keep cool. Did you know that using your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner may not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you money? In order to do that you have to ensure you’re using ceiling fans and your air conditioning properly. Here’s a couple things to remember:
Raise Your Thermostat
This is where the cost savings can potentially come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your expenses. Raising your thermostat by a few degrees, in addition to running your ceiling fan, shouldn’t impact your comfort level that much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lessening the length of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.
Adjust Air Direction
Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to switch dependent on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to make sure the air is blowing down. You can stand underneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually lower the temperature of the air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature shown on the thermostat.
Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There
Treat your ceiling fan like you would lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to benefit from the wind chill that a fan produces you’re wasting energy by using your fan. Keep in mind, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
